Our Mission: New Kent County Public Schools will equip every student with the knowledge, skills, and character to excel in the three Es (Employment, Enlistment, and Enrollment). this graphic contains information about the 2025 Freshman Orientation at New Kent High School

New Kent High School will host Freshman Orientation on Thursday, August 14th, with two sessions based on student last names. Students will receive schedules, meet teachers, and tour the school.

The Upperclassman Open House for grades 10–12 will take place on Tuesday, August 12th, with two available sessions. Students can pick up schedules, pay course fees, and purchase parking passes.

Students unable to attend either event will receive their schedules during homeroom on the first day of school, Monday, August 18th, 2025.

To prepare for a strong academic year, all students enrolled in a DE and/or AP course are required to complete summer reading.

  • 10th grade students will read The Secrets of College Success by Lynn Jacobs and Jeremy Hyman.

  • 11th and 12th grade students will choose one of the following:

    • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

    • Atomic Habits by James Clear

Students will engage in class discussions and assignments during the first week of school. Book selections were made based on accessibility, relevance, and developmental appropriateness.

The Virginia Department of Education offers key resources for families of students with disabilities, including the Special Education Parent Involvement Survey (open through December 12th, 2025), a two-part virtual training on "Critical Decision Points" (July 9th and 16th, 2025), and the 2025 Family Engagement Summit with in-person sessions in Glen Allen (June 7th) and Harrisonburg (August 9th). Registration links and contact information for Dr. Chiquita Seaborne are provided for all educational opportunities.
